City of Eagle River Clarifies Role in Fourth of July Fireworks

EAGLE RIVER, Wis. — Following this year’s Independence Day holiday, the City of Eagle River is providing clarification regarding its role in the annual Fourth of July fireworks display after becoming aware of questions from residents.

The City of Eagle River has not historically organized, sponsored, or funded the community fireworks display. In past years, the event has been planned and financed by local organizations and/or individual community members who coordinated fundraising, secured a licensed fireworks contractor, and managed the event.

The City’s responsibility is limited to reviewing and approving a fireworks permit application submitted by the organization planning the display. As part of that process, the City ensures the proposed event complies with applicable laws, safety requirements, and local ordinances, and is approved by the Fire and Police Chiefs.

For the 2026 Independence Day holiday, the City did not receive a permit application from any organization or individual seeking approval to conduct a public fireworks display within the City. Because no permit application was submitted, the City had no opportunity to review or approve a public fireworks event.

Likewise, the City does not solicit or collect donations to fund community fireworks displays. Fundraising for previous displays has been conducted independently by the organizations or individuals responsible for organizing the event.

“The Fourth of July fireworks have been a valued community tradition for many years,” said City Administrator Robin Ginner. “We sincerely appreciate the volunteers, organizations, businesses, and community members who have dedicated their time and resources to making those celebrations possible. We hope this clarification helps residents better understand the City’s role, which is limited to reviewing permit applications and ensuring public safety requirements are met.”

The City remains committed to working with any qualified organization that wishes to organize a future public fireworks display by reviewing the required permit applications, and making sure the appropriate coordination in accordance with Wisconsin law and City ordinances.
